Getting Started

Go from install to your first story map in under 5 minutes.

1

Install

Install User Story Mapping for Jira from the Atlassian Marketplace. Grant the requested Jira scopes — the App needs read access to your issues and write access to update fields like fix version and priority when you drag items.

2

Open a Project

Navigate to any Jira project and click User Story Mapping for Jira in the project sidebar. The App reads your epics, stories, tasks, and bugs to build the map automatically.

3

Map Your Backlog

Your story map is organized as a 2D grid:

  • Columns — user activities (epics) across the top, representing the journey.
  • Rows — priority swimlanes that slice your backlog into releases or sprints.
  • Cards — individual issues placed at the intersection of activity and priority.

Drag cards between cells to reprioritize. Drag activity headers to reorder the journey. Changes sync back to Jira.

4

Slice Releases

Use the swimlane selector to group by fix version or sprint. Drag issues into the target swimlane to assign them. The horizontal "walking skeleton" line separates must-have stories from nice-to-haves.

What's Next?

  • Use the filter bar to narrow the map by issue type, assignee, label, or status.
  • Right-click any card for quick actions — open in Jira, change status, or assign.
  • Check the full documentation for advanced features.
